We received a call from a chap who had found a cat in his new house. He wasn’t sure what to do, so we arranged for him to come into the Shelter. Luckily, Ash had a microchip so we were able to get in touch with his owner.
It turned out that Ash and his owner had recently moved 8 miles away! Ash had managed to make the long way back to his old address. He had been missing just over two months and the owner thought she’d never see him again.
Sadly, over the two months Ash was missing, his owner’s circumstances at home had changed and illness meant she couldn’t take him back.
During the time Ash was missing, he picked up many parasitic passengers and they were doing their nasty work. Ash was skinny, scabby and covered in fleas. He was bald from the shoulder blades down and really needed some TLC. Ash was also suffering with Flea Allergy Dermatitis.
We applied a thorough flea treatment, gave him lots of pampering with a flea comb and soft brush. Alongside lots of tasty food and treats for being such a good boy.
After a short while, we started to see his skin improve, his fur was growing back and he started putting some weight on. He was such a happy and loving cat. What a transformation!
Ash now lives in his new home and goes by the name, Henry. He has put on some weight which is really positive, and his fur is looking lovely now! His new owners keep on top of his flea and parasite treatments and he is doing amazingly well.
We have unfortunately had many cats with the same condition as Ash come into the shelter this year. Flea allergy dermatitis is incredibly uncomfortable for the cats, and can cause them to overgroom and scratch to the point that they have sores and skin infections. This can take a long time to treat and can require steroids and antibiotics before the cats finally feel comfortable and start to heal.
Treating a cat for flea allergy dermatitis can cost us £289.
