When visiting a cats’ shelter, it’s easy to be drawn to adorable kittens, however, many adult cats in shelters are often overlooked, waiting patiently for their forever homes. We believe adult cats and the ‘inbetweeners’ – those that aren’t feral but aren’t lap cats either – who still need a home, deserve just as much love and attention as kittens. Here’s why:

Why Adult Cats Are Overlooked
Adult cats are often passed by for a variety of reasons. Firstly, because kittens are small, cute and friendly, often energetic and playful straight away.
There’s a misconception that adult cats might have behavioural issues or won’t bond closely with their new families. Some people also believe that adopting an adult cat means fewer years together.
While their age may affect the number of years you’ll have together, adult cats still bond well with their new adopters.
Adult cats may also seem more reserved or less playful – they’re likely to sleep a lot more than a younger cat but given time many cats will start to show off their cuddly or playful sides when they feel safe and secure.

The Benefits of Adopting an Adult Cat
Despite the perceived preference for kittens, adult cats offer many benefits. They have established personalities, so it is much easier to gauge their temperament and energy level more accurately.
For that reason, it can actually be it easier to find a cat that fits more seamlessly into your lifestyle, whether you’re looking for a laid-back lap cat or a more independent feline friend.
Another advantage of adopting an adult cat is they are more likely to already be trained. Many adult cats are litter trained and accustomed to living in a home, making the transition into your household smoother. You won’t have to worry about the same level of supervision and training that a kitten requires.
On top of the benefits of having a more behaviourally secure and better trained cat, adopting an adult cat from a shelter can be incredibly rewarding. These cats often have more difficulty finding homes, and by choosing to adopt one, you’re giving a deserving animal a second chance at a happy life and helping them find their forever home.

Why ‘Inbetweeners’ Make Great Pets
Inbetweeners, those cats that fall somewhere outside of the usual preferred pets, can also make wonderful companions.
The inbetweeners, as we like to call them, are ones that aren’t feral but aren’t lap cats either. Some are friendly, but prefer an outdoor setting and full autonomy, whereas others aren’t used to being around humans, so need the freedom an outdoor home can provide this could perhaps be in a garden shed, a garage, a stable, a farm or an outbuilding.
For the cats, they get a second chance, a stable home, food and shelter but also continued independence and reduced boredom.
While these cats may not always seek out attention as persistently as kittens or the often preferred ‘lap cats’, this can actually be a benefit for many adopters. These cats often enjoy a good play session or some affection but are also content to entertain themselves, making them ideal for individuals or families with busy schedules.
