Shelter Roles
Who are we looking for?
Cat lovers! You must be reliable, hard-working and able to work on your own AND as part of a team to a given standard.
Please bear in mind that we are a small shelter and may not have suitable space straight away- if this is the case you will be asked to be added to a waiting list, to be contacted when an appropriate space comes up.
Although we understand that you might not be able to attend some of your allotted sessions, we do ask that you take this placement seriously and make every effort to maintain your attendance. Repeatedly not attending your slot without explanation will lead to you being asked to no longer volunteer.
Link not working? You can access downloadable application forms here.
The Sheffield Cats Shelter Cat Room Duties
9:30am to 12:30pm – any day
Cat room volunteers arrive at the shelter at 9.30am on their allotted day. They gather in the kitchen to wash, dry and re-fill the litter trays and complete other kitchen chores whilst staff finish the morning feeding and medication.
At 10am the rooms are allocated for cleaning. New volunteers are trained to carry out their cleaning duties to meet the Shelter’s very high standards. Once you have finished your cleaning you can spend time with the cats in your room until the end of the shift at 12:30pm.
You are welcome to bring a packed lunch and eat with us: in fine weather we eat this in the garden, often with some of the cats who also enjoy the sunshine!
Please note that for certain cleaning tasks a certain level of physical fitness is required, however there are always other tasks available for those with disabilities or other physical difficulties.
The Sheffield Cats Shelter General Assistant Duties
1pm to 3:30pm – any day
General Assistants provide invaluable help for The Shelter’s Cat Care Staff during our busy afternoons.
There is a wide range of jobs that a General Assistant can be asked to do, from helping to wash blankets and bedding, to general cleaning, to helping organise the cats’ food and other donated items. The help that they offer goes so far towards helping our Cat Care Staff feed, medicate and look after our cats.
The Sheffield Cats Shelter Admin and Reception Duties
1pm – 3:30pm – any day
The Shelter is open to the public between 1pm and 3.00pm daily, and the telephone is answered between 1:00pm and 3:30pm every day.
With the support and training provided by the Shelter Staff our reception volunteers answer calls from the public, dealing with wide range of enquiries that the Sheffield Cats Shelter receives.
In addition you will be trained to help with The Shelter’s day to day admin jobs, and to answer e-mails from our main e-mail account.
Volunteers who attend on days where we are open to the public will also be trusted to answer the door to visitors and help to organise their paperwork.
